EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Thirteen East Providence police officers laid off last month may be back on the job later this week.
City officials and union representatives have reached an
agreement that brings the officers back in exchange for several
concessions and contract modifications that will save the same
amount - almost $900,000 - the city was projected to save by laying off the officers.
Union president John Rossi tells The Providence Journal the deal is "fair and equitable."
Councilor Robert Cusack says he appreciates the union's efforts.
The union agreed to give up the next six holidays and agreed to give up their annual uniform payments for two years.
The deal still needs the approval of the city council at Tuesday
night's meeting.
