Carcieri Vetoes Saltwater Fishing License

Chris Boardman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Don Carcieri has vetoed legislation requiring a $7 license for recreational
saltwater anglers in the Ocean State.

The bill would have made it illegal to fish in the ocean without
getting a license. The state already forces freshwater fishermen to buy an $18 license.

In announcing his veto Thursday the Republican governor called saltwater fishing a "birthright" for Rhode Islanders.

State lawmakers passed the measure after Congress mandated that states license recreational fishermen and track their catch more closely. Fishermen in states that don't comply could face more expensive federal fees.

Democrats in the General Assembly hold a veto-proof majority and can override Carcieri's objections.

We all can pay up to the right to use state and federal property or wither and die just like the great state of RI. No matter, fisherman will be imposed a fee, be it a state or federal (maybe both) so that the government can conclude that fish are endangered because of you and I fishing with a rod and reel in a legal manner. They will rally with the comercial fishing industry against recreational fisherman.

It's not that he said no to the $7, he said no to the added DEM officials needed to monitor the fisherman, no problem he will simply add that the current tax proposal, employ the DEM folks and then bring it to $18, there goes your birth rites

Since salt water fishing is a Rhode Island birthright, does that mean he's going to repeal the $18 fee for freshwater fishing also. No one that I know eats any freshwater fish from RI waters because their all poluted. $18 seems outrageous for catch and release. The only fish that gets stocked is trout and you have to buy a seperate trout stamp for that. Stop boo hoo'ing about the $7. It's been along time coming. You're lucky it's not $18.

$7 sounds like a bargain to me...go to the fish market and buy fish for $5-10 a pound or pay $7 for a license to catch your own...use the $7 to nab the fishermen who keep illegal sizes and quantities of fish they catch, I've seen this happen too many times to count...

Why charge for a salt water license ? Its not as if in the case of a trout stamp , the money is used for conservation and for the trout hatchery . This money is NOT going to the fishery , therefore its just another tax . A tax all fishermen don't need or want. Nobody cares its just fishermen , lets put a tariff/ license for people who want to golf see how that goes over . Now they raise the CRMC pass fee 100% to $100.00 ENOUGH ALREADY!.

"Carcieri, you idiot! Why send the money to the feds when we could have kept it in the state?" Pay attention to the article, the bill will pass anyway, because of the Democrats majority override. Carcieri knows it will pass regardless, but he had to make a point that saltwater fishing is a right for R.I..
