Lynch Blasts Carcieri on Gay Rights Bill Veto

Chris Boardman

Rhode Island Attorney General and Democratic Governor hopeful Patrick Lynch has criticized Governor Don Carcieri for his veto of a bill that would allow gay couples to make funeral arrangements.

Below are some comments from Lynch sent out in a press release.

Today, candidate for Governor and current Attorney General Patrick Lynch blasted Governor Carcieri’s veto of legislation that would give domestic partners the right to claim the bodies of and make funeral arrangements for their loved ones.

“I can only describe the Governor's veto as cruel and heartless," Lynch said. "By vetoing this bill, he has demonstrated that he believes gay and lesbian Rhode Islanders are second-class citizens. If this bill comes before me as Governor, I will sign it immediately."

“It takes more than just talk to demonstrate a commitment to equality for all. It takes action,” Lynch said. “I have a record of proactively fighting for equality for gay and lesbian Rhode Islanders and I pledge to continue this fight as Governor.”

I was pastor of MCC Providence in the 70's. I have seen parents do exactly the opposite of what partners wanted in a funeral. I have been in a relationship for 25 years. I think my family would not have the foggiest notion of what I want, but my partner does and will do what I want. The AG is correct, the governor is mean-spirited and not a true man of faith. Faith means loving your neighbor, even -- I believe-- if your neighbor is gay or transgendered.

Religion has infected America and is destroying our Constitution. Not one crooked rep has the balls to enforce the equal protection clauses, same for the Supreme Court of idiots. The "Separation of Church and State Clauses" were to protect the people from America becoming a religious state like Iran. My partner and I moved here 6 yrs ago from San Francisco because of a work relo. Now we own businesses, a house, we need to feel that our rights and assets are protected. This is the biggest reason we are thinking of leaving RI. We pay more taxes here than in San Francisco, one of the most expensive cities in the US. We pay all this money but don't have the most basic rights married couples have. This latest snub by Carcieri is a catalyst for us to make a plan to leave. He will only miss our $$

I guess Gov Carcieri can rest happy at night, knowing he's shoved a nice little zinger into the middle of the grief that must be occasioned by losing one's beloved life partner of long years. If the gov doesn't credit such couples, I guess nobody else is supposed to take them kindly, either. Alas, Lord have mercy. Bad religion, and mean to boot.

My husband and I have been married for 16 years and no one but the two of us can do anything to mar the sanctity of our union. No one has the right to tell two consenting adults they can not get married, that they can not have the same union as any other two consenting adults and religion should not come into it at all. How horrific would it be for anyone not to be able to make funeral arrangements for their loved one because of people's fears and prejudices. We were all created EQUAL!

A comment to "RI Taxpayer"-that is why Civil Marriage is necessary in RI for same-sex couples. If a married straight person dies it is assumed that their husband/wife will make these decisions. There will be no confusion at all if the couple was married. A comment for "Joe from Warwick"-Civil Unions do not bring with them all of the civil rights and responsibilities as civil married. We will run into additional situations this this. Separate is not equal!!!

In the 21 years that my partner and I have been together, I have seen a number of hetro's married, divorced and remarried. Where is the so-called sanctity of marriage governor Carcieri is always yapping about? There are people that get married just so they can stay in this country and they have more rights than gay couples...lol@sanctity. Oh and the ones that get married because the woman is pregnant and they feel they "have" to...once again...lol@sanctity

The simple solution would be civil unions. It would be written into law swiftly and everyone in RI would be afforded the same rights.

It's still amazing that there are those who would cry 'foul' if THEIR rights were diminished, or didn't even exist (such as the right for same-gender couples to marry, which answers 3:06 PM RI Taxpayer post); Yet again, it seems impossible for those with the right to put themselves in the shoes of those who do not. Marriage for all is not a special treatment, either. How can those who oppose validate their positions but through fear and hate? What if hetero marriage were banned? Think about it!!

I agree with the Governor and his reasons for vetoing this bill. How is the state and/or hospital supposed to know who someone's partner is or how long they have been together to give them preference over someone's family on life and death issues and funeral arrangements. Couldn't these provisions be put in a person's will without making it the law for everyone.

I find it a refreshing change when a politician stands up, immediately, and takes a firm stand on where he is with a very worthy issue. We DO live in a country that boasts equality for all. Vetoing this bill leaves a large group of Americans wondering when their equality will be handed back to them. Thank you Mr. Lynch - you have my vote.

The AG is shortsighted; I certainly would not want a governor to make decisions about our states future based on his own biases which clearly come from within his own family; a governor has to look at all of his constituents when he makes decisions. I would not say that AG Lynch speaks for the majority of RI's voters. Also, from another perspective, Lynch does not understand his own Catholic faith which he conveniently claims each election cycle. RI should say no thanks to this indifference.

We all hope that Carcieri has to go through the same ordeal and agony of making funeral arragements like gay's and lesbian's have to, then he would see how difficult it is to obtain closure during a time of greef while dealing with relatives that come out of the woodworks so they can obtain their part of the estate even though they have not spoke with the person in 40 years!
