Sticker Placement on Alleged Party Houses Challenged

Chris Boardman

BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) - Lawyers for University of Rhode Island
students will ask a judge to strike down a law allowing police in
Narragansett to place stickers on homes that host loud parties.

The stickers are intended to deter raucous gatherings among URI students who live off-campus. Students say the stickers are an unfair stigma, and landlords say the notices make it hard to rent out their apartments.

The first sticker is just a warning, but a second noise violation carries a $300 fine.

The town says the law is constitutional and wants U.S. District
Judge William Smith to leave it intact.

The arguments are scheduled Tuesday evening at the Roger
Williams University School of Law. No immediate decision is
expected.
