National Grid Passes on Clean Power Purchase

Chris Boardman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Power company National Grid has again rejected a proposal to buy clean power from a planned wind farm off the coast on Block Island.

Rhode Island's largest electric utility said in a letter to state regulators Wednesday that it would not agree to the latest
offer from Deepwater Wind for power from the $200 million wind farm because the price is still too high.

It is the second time National Grid has turned down the New
Jersey-based company's offer.

National Grid's decision follows several weeks of talks between
the sides with encouragement from Gov. Don Carcieri, who thinks offshore wind energy would help bring hundreds of jobs in the state.

There is still time for the sides to find common ground.

RI residents need to become more self-sufficient instead of at the mercy of the political payoffs and corrupt corporations. RI's ocean and shoreline are assets they now want to destroy further by a wind farm. Is there anyone with common sense and logical thinking in RI gov't...I sadly fear not!

Nat'l Grid is a MONOPOLY. While I do not agree with a wind farm in our ocean, I would support legislation that brings wind power to city residents by allowing them to put small wind turbines on their homes. Time to say bye-bye to utility companies raising prices and shutting people off.
