I am a tax payer who does not support abortion but am not opposed to my tax dollars going to someone who feels that it is right for them. The Bishop and his church do not pay taxes and should keep that in mind. The Catholic system has a right to preach against abortion but not to require my taxes to follow their restricted teachings. This is not Iran.

The Church's position is troubling in this matter. The Bishop asserts that religious edict supercedes the Constitutional right to Freedom of Speech. Chris Matthews was correct to advise the bishop to review the teaching of Jesus Christ to "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesars's and to God, the things that are God's.

Force them to adhere to every law that every other business must adhere to. The Catholic church has been and always will be the defender of it's own faith no matter what. It tries to hide and or ignore the molestations that have occurred in the past and future. Patrick should just associate himself with a religion that more closely aligns with his beliefs. That's why there are thousands of religions out there. Oh, and by the way? I think that artificial insemination and the like should also be banned - it's unnatural and women aren't made to have litters of kids. I think the Catholic Church should remember that it's City State is in Rome....not Rhode Island. We are a democracy, not an absolute monarchy (as the Catholic Church bills it self as on the holy see's website). If they want to rule stick to the Vatican, their laws and teachings have no foot hold here. Our Nation comes first and at least the rebel senators realize this.

If you're Catholic, you're obligated to obey the teaching and directives of the Catholic Church. If you're pro-abortion and Catholic, well you're in violation of the Church's teachings and should thus be disciplined up to and including excommunication. But we know that won't happen because the church and organized religion are just another business making money. Just like with gay marriage, it's all business decisions for the church. As a Congressman it is Kennedy’s responsibility to represent his constituents, not to use his office to advance his own personal feelings or religious beliefs. Shame on the Bishop for attempting to impede Kennedy’s ability to take part in remembering the sacrifice that Christ made for all believers. Isn’t that the objective of communion? Another great example of the hypocrisy within the Catholic church. Keep it up Catholics….the pews keep thinning.
