Kennedy Appears at Brown in Wake of Church Dispute

It's been weeks since the feud between congressman Patrick Kennedy and Bishop Thomas Tobin escalated.

Now, the Democratic lawmaker has made his first public appearance since the argument took over national headlines.

Kennedy spoke at Brown University this afternoon about the politics of health care reform.

The same topic that prompted his feud with the church.

Last week, Kennedy told the Providence Journal he was banned by Bishop Tobin from receiving holy communion in the Catholic Church over his support for abortion rights.

I voted for Kennedy to represent _me_ in congress, not Bishop Tobin or the Catholic Church. I'm glad he let us all know he is not a puppet of the Church.

A bishop is first and foremost a teacher of the faith and doctrines of that faith. If so called Catholic politicians want to take stands politically that run contrary to the teachings of the Church, they best be prepared to give an accounting of themselves. Politicans are too use to having it both ways...Sorry Mr. Kennedy, there are moral principles involved in the abortion debate...principles in which one cannot bend to suit political expediency.

If it wasn't for the fact that he comes from a long line of untouchable New England "royalty," this guy would be deemed incompetent to even hold a position as a city councilman. The sad fact that he's a congressman shows how the vast majority of voters in RI are nothing but clueless sheep.
