Chafee Officially Launching Campaign for RI Governor

Chris Boardman

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Lincoln Chafee is officially entering the
Rhode Island governor's race.

Chafee, a former Republican senator who had earlier formed an
exploratory campaign to start fundraising for the race, is running
as an independent to succeed Gov. Don Carcieri in the 2010 election.

Chafee is announcing his candidacy Monday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Warwick - the city where he once served as mayor.

Attorney General Patrick Lynch and General Treasurer Frank
Caprio are vying for the Democratic nomination. The Republican party was left without a declared candidate after businessman Rory Smith withdrew from the race earlier this month.

Chafee lost his Senate seat in 2006 to Democrat Sheldon
Whitehouse.

He is running as an Independent this time, then will change to a Democrat when he loses so the transformation will be complete.

Already can't make up his mind. Running as an Independent? Can't pick a party or have a stand on an issue that he wont try to straddle both sides!
