UMASS Approves Plan to Absorb Neighboring Law School

Chris Boardman

BOSTON (AP) - University of Massachusetts President Jack Wilson has endorsed a plan that would create the state's first public law school by absorbing the currently private Southern New England School of Law.

Wilson said in a statement Friday that a proposal developed by
UMass-Dartmouth Chancellor Jean MacCormack was financially sound.

MacCormack's plan would grow the law program's cash balance to $10.2 million by the 2018 fiscal year, and boost enrollment from 278 students to 559 in the same time.

Wilson says the plan is in line with the university's mission.

The Dartmouth school has offered to donate itself to UMass.
Opponents, including state Treasurer and gubernatorial candidate Tim Cahill, say the state cannot afford to accept the offer during a recession.
