actually we would still have this problem even if we did stop eating meat...remember the spinach episode a few years ago? You can find ecoli in vegetables, kiddie pools, our water supply...so not eating meat is not the solution!

Sure...stop eating meat...because there are never any problems with our vegetables. Remember the spinach recalls? Feces in our vegetables. What are we supposed to eat? Boy some people are just STUPID.

Many of you are not reading the story. The girl's family was not the consumer. The girl was away at camp. The fault lies between the meat plant and the camp. And YES SUE!!! It's not ALL about the money but in making people accountable for their actions and lack of precaution taking. If I sent my daughter away to camp I'd like to be assured she wasn't going to get sick from the food....warning labels or not.

When you buy meat doesn't the package have a warning label on it. Just like cigarettes have a warning don't people ignore the warnings? The meat company did what was required and yet ignorant people still want to sue. If you choose to ignore the warnings and suffer consequences don't blame someone else for your stupidity. When the sign on the swimming pool says no diving how many people ignore it and get hurt every year? Own up to the foolish choices you make.

I agree that something should be done! A USDA inspection and a total overhaul! But to shut down the plant entirely would be a mistake. It could be that an innocent mistake was made, and who knows if it really originated from that plant! They should be fully investigated and corrected, but not shut down! Besides we are looking at small businesses like this that help run the economy! In this economic turmoil that this country is in, can we really afford to loose anymore jobs?

If this were my Daughter, I would be outraged and take better precautions for my family! I would not shop from this meat market ever again! What is a person to gain from suing? If the daughter is well now, move on to another meat market, and don't look back! The company if proven negligent, should be responsible for the hospital bills but nothing more! Thank God your Daughter is alive and doing well!

Have you ever wondered why people who work in the meat plants and are exposed to these harmful foodbourne bacteria are not the ones getting sick? How many ways can you tell someone to cook their food well? Duh! E-Coli cannot be eliminated, it is everywhere. Many babies die from childbirth because of E-Coli in the mothers stool. the person who cooked the meat is to blame not the meat processor, but let's blame the guy with the deep pockets cause it makes us feel better to steal from someone else.

First of all I would love for real federal inspectors to go into the plants you will find a lot of them hire illegal workers and that's a fact of life in these places just like allot of large scale bakery companies hire them. this is also part of the issue that no one wants to deal with. How dose the meat get tainted? bye workers not cleaning themselves up and not wearing protective gear. as far as suing whats the point the only ones who will make the real money are the lawyers

I have a child that almost died from ecoli. He spent 2 months in he hospital in kidney failure and we do not know where the ecoli came from. Rather then suing, in my opinion, there should be a push for tougher testing/cleaning regulations at the plants…this should be for any food processing plant as beef is not the only source of ecoli that has sickened people. Will we ever be ecoli free – no but we can reduce the risk.

The point is NOT that we should have to 'cook the e coli' out of the product. It should not be present in the product to begin with. I know that meat can be tainted, i.e. steak, on the outside but when it is seared, or taken to 160 degrees it kills bacteria even if the center of the cut is rare. Ground beef mixes the outside of the cut which would be tainted. I am not a lawyer nor do I know the family of the ill child. This is clearly unacceptable. I do not eat ground beef anymore myself.

The meat plant I'm sure send millions of pounds of beef out their doors and the fact that only a few people got sick is amazing. We have pretty good handling and safety guidelines in place, but we also have to cook it properly in a clean environment. I am so thankful, as a human being and a parent that the child has recovered, but it seems like we are going crazy blaming the plant. What about the conditions in the kitchen at the camp. They were the people who got sick.

All you people sound exactly like you work for either the meat company or the crooked lawyers involved, have any of you bleeding hearts ever had food poisoning of any kind, I have had it 4 times in my life, and its a feeling of being near death. The clincher is none of the doctors want to diagnose the ailment or even get involved putting their finger on what the cause is, they will always say it could be a virus, which is almost similar. Food poisoning suits are one of the hardest to prove.

Is unsanitary conditions in a meat plant a cause for e-coli? No but good sanitary practices and good manufacturing practices can help reduce the spread of e-coli in a plant. A lot of meat plants do periodic testing, beef is steam pasteurized, or has gone through an acid wash to help prevent e-coli but does this mean all beef will be e-coli free. No but it reduces the chances dramatically. Will meat be contaminated in a small meat plant like South Shore Packin? Slightly possible, highly unlikley.

If the ground beef is not cooked properly it does not get hot enough to kill the bacteria. Can the plant be blamed for selling e-coli tainted beef? Yes they can because e-coli is an adulterant. Is there a way the plant would know if there was e0coli in the beef? No unless they sent it out to be tested or bought tested products. Can beef that tested negative for e-coli still have e-coli? Yes but the more testing that is done reduces the chance.

It is easy for people who really do not understand to go out and say sue. The facts are first if the burger was cooked properly the e-coli would have died and there would be no sickness. So can you blame the cook? Yes you can. E-coli is an adulterant in ground beef, and mechanically tenderized beef only because e-coli is on the outside of beef, and when ground or tenderized the E-Coli is pushed into the middle of the beef.

the point of suing for a very sizable amount is that it is one of the only ways we as consumers have the ability to effect change with large corporations. if the company were only forced to pay the hospital bills they would continue to produce tainted beef. A payoff of millions is going to make them think twice about questionable Quality practices. So, in the end it IS about the money. Yes, the family will get paid, but it will hopefully force the company to change it's current operations

The parents have a right to have the hospital bills paid. This goes deeper than the meat company. If you really want to know why this is happening to our food go see Food Inc. Food spourses are not being raised or fed as "back in the day". Cows are being fed corn which their stomachs cannot break down and then produce an overgrowth of E-coli, to combat that the meat gets an ammonia wash to treat the E-coli. Apeitizing isnt it. Gets better the USDA knows all about it.

You are suing the company's insurance company, not the company..That's why they pay the big bucks for insurance. There is a lot of suspect food out there, just look at the labels.

Im not saying that the parents dont have a case nor am i saying they shouldn't sue, the problem today is the sum of money being sued over. should the meat company be held responsible for hospital bills yes, but beyond that no. any further lawsuit should be about getting that placed closed or making sure it doesnt happen again anyone who dissagrees is looking for easy money if met many of them and it gets sickening how many are actually out there. heaven forbid people make mistakes

Interesting... It's so easy for many of you to judge, when i'm quite certain if you and your child were in the same situation, you'd sue the company too. Not everybody is looking for the "free ride", but I'm quite certain you'd want the company to try and be more cautious with their product.

Why not, what happened to self responsibility? Why do some people think that someone else should always have to pay? God forbid the family may have to go without their blue ray DVD player this Xmas b/c they now have a hospital bill. Isn't being grateful that 1. they even had a child, 2 the kid was even able to go to this camp and 3. that now the child is ok, Enough? Unfortunately discontent with what they have = Greed

People justify suing anyway they can. But the bottom line is that they're looking for a free ride. There are producers and takers in this society, and now also those who "work" just to take! If it was not about the $, then they would spend their respources following Board of Health complaint procedures. If the child had a strong immune system he/or she wouldn't even get that sick. I'm sure any $ won will be spent on a bigger TV, not on a grant for meat handler prevention education!

The act of suing is not always just to make $$$. Unfortunately it is one of the only ways to keep companies accountable for putting out a bad product. i.e. contaminated beef. By the way illness from E. Coli contaminated beef can leave you paralyzed or kill you, this is not just about money.

These days, unfortunatly, if you dont sue, you are concidered stupid. In 1975 my dad and I were victims of a drunk driver.
