RI Democrats, Republicans unite to host relief fundraiser for Haitian victims
PAWTUCKET - Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch and Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Giovanni D. Cicione today announced that both parties would come together to host a joint community fundraiser next Thursday in Providence to benefit the victims of the Haitian earthquake.
"Both Chairman Cicione and I felt it was important to put aside political differences and come together to offer our parties' combined assistance to the good people of Haiti. We're asking all Democrats, Republicans and independents to join us next Thursday, give whatever they can, and make sure the Haitian people know that Rhode Islanders are standing with them during this critical time of need," Lynch said.
"As Rhode Islanders, we share a common obligation to assist our friends and neighbors. Haiti is facing a crisis of unimaginable proportion and so I'm hopeful that we can step up as a community and send critical support to a nation that desperately needs our help. The thoughts and prayers of all Rhode Islanders remain with the victims in Haiti and their family members here in the U.S. and around the world," Cicione said.
The community fundraiser will be held next Thursday, January 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the Roger Williams Park Casino, in Providence. The chairmen said the suggested contribution will be $25, or whatever one feels they can afford. All proceeds will benefit Doctors Without Borders, a relief organization that is rushing to provide assistance to victims in a country that is dramatically under served by medical professionals.
The event will be co-sponsored by The Rhode Island Young Democrats and The Rhode Island Young Republicans. Additionally, the members of Rhode Island's Congressional delegation, the general officers, and leaders in the General Assembly have been invited and are expected to be in attendance.
