ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - After nearly a week of hype, the Red Sox and Rays play game one of the American League Championship Series in St. Petersburg tonight.
The Red Sox send Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound against Tampa Bay's Jamie Shields.
The teams have a history of bad blood, but players on both sides say that won't matter.
Tensions began in 2000 when Pedro Martinez plunked Gerald Williams, and he rushed the mound. This year, the chippiness continued when Boston outfielder Coco Crisp took a run at Shields, prompting a bench-clearing scuffle.
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia says Boston has a lot of respect for the Rays and it's no fluke that they're in the ALCS.
Game two of the best-of-seven series is tomorrow night in Florida, with games three and four back at Fenway Park early next week.
