RED SOX ACTIVATE SHORTSTOP JED LOWRIE FROM 60-DAY DISABLED LIST;

Red Sox release

OPTION TO SHORT-SEASON SINGLE-A LOWELL

OF Jonathan Van Every Designated for Assignment

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox today activated shortstop Jed Lowrie from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Short-Season Single-A Lowell. To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Jonathan Van Every was designated for assignment.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Lowrie, 25, appeared in five games for Boston this season before landing on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist sprain on April 13 (retroactive to April 12). On April 21, the switch-hitter underwent an ulnar styloid excision and arthroscopic ligament repair on his left wrist performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan. Lowrie began a minor league rehab assignment on June 21, combining to go 5-for-19 (.263) with a double, three RBI, two runs and two walks over seven games between Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland.

Lowrie will start at shortstop tonight and bat second when the Spinners take on the Tri-City ValleyCats at LeLacheur Park beginning at 7:05 p.m.
