Providence College Friars announce basketball schedule

2009-10 PROVIDENCE MEN’S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED



PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Head Coach Keno Davis announced the men’s basketball team’s 2009-10 schedule on Thursday, September 10. The schedule is highlighted by home games against BIG EAST opponents Connecticut, Louisville, Syracuse and Georgetown . In non-conference action, the Friars will host ACC foe Boston College and will travel to SEC opponent Alabama. The Friars will play four non-conference road games this season, which will mark the most the squad has played since 1982-83.



The Friars will play 18 BIG EAST games this season, three of which will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2. The 18-game format will allow each team to play every league opponent once and three teams twice. PC’s home league schedule will feature games versus Louisville on January 6, Rutgers on January 9, University of South Florida on January 23, Connecticut on January 27, Marquette on February 6, Georgetown on February 9 on ESPN2, West Virginia on February 17, Syracuse on February 23 and Seton Hall on March 6.



Providence will open its BIG EAST season on the road with games at Notre Dame on December 30 and St. John’s on January 3. The Friars’ other league road games are at DePaul on January 14 on ESPN or ESPN2, Marquette on January 17, Cincinnati on January 30, Syracuse on February 2, Villanova on February 13, USF on February 27 and Pittsburgh on March 4 on ESPN or ESPN2.



In non-conference action, the Friars will open the season by hosting a four-team, round-robin tournament, the World Vision Invitational, at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on November 13, 14 and 15. The Friars will face Bryant on November 13, Bucknell on November 14 and Mercer on November 15. Other highlights from the Friars’ non-conference schedule include a home game versus Boston College on November 28 and road games at Alabama on November 20 and intra-state rival Rhode Island on December 5.



The Friars’ non-conference schedule also will feature home games versus Vermont on November 24, Brown on December 7, Iona on December 12 and Yale on December 21. In other road non-conference action, the Friars will travel to Northeastern on December 1 and George Washington on December 9.



Only start times for non-league and league games televised on ESPN and ESPN 2 have been released today. The remainder of the game times and the full television schedule will be released at a later date.



Providence will open its season with an exhibition game versus Merrimack at PC’s Alumni Hall on Saturday, October 31 at 4:00 p.m. It will mark the Friars’ first game at Alumni Hall since the team played the Russian National squad on January 22, 1978. The Friars also will play an exhibition game versus Stonehill College on November 7 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.



Fans can get their first glimpse of the team at the annual Late Night Madness festivities at Alumni Hall on Friday, October 16. Doors will open at 9:30 p.m. and admission is free. The Friars also will be in action at the team’s Fanfest at Alumni Hall on Saturday, October 24. The day will include interactive events for children and adults followed by the annual Mal Brown Scrimmage. The events will begin at noon in Mullaney Gymnasium.



Season tickets for Friar men’s basketball start at just $166.
