Brown Wins The Battle Of The Bears Over Maine, 75-62

BROWN NEWS RELEASE

Providence, Rhode Island – Senior Matt Mullery scored a game high 24 points and junior Peter Sullivan added 20 points to lead the Brown Bears to a 75-62 victory over the Maine Black Bears at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win gives the Bears a 2-3 record, while Maine drops to 2-2.

Mullery’s 24 points came on 9 of 14 shooting from the field, while handing out four assists and grabbing five rebounds. Sullivan did most of his damage from behind the three point arc, connecting on 4 of 8 treys and 7 of 11 shots overall.

Brown trailed 34-32 at the half after hitting just 2 of 11 treys. The Bears caught fire after intermission, connecting on 6 of their first 9 treys to grab a 57-48 lead with 10:29 remaining in the game on a three-point basket by Peter Sullivan.

The Bears extended their lead to 10 points, 62-52, on a lay-up by Andrew McCarthy with 6:14 left in the game.

Maine outscored the Bears, 5-0, to pull to within five points of the Bears, 62-57, on a trey by Gerald McLemore with 4:37 left to play.

But that was as close as the Black Bears could get as strong free throw shooting down the stretch iced the game for the Brown. Bears’ senior Steve Gruber converted six of six free throws in the game’s final 58 seconds to solidify the victory.

McCarthy earned his first collegiate start for the Bears and was a solid addition to the Bears’ front-court. He scored 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field, while grabbing a team high six rebounds.

Freshman Matt Sullivan tossed in eight points for the Bears, while freshman Tucker Halpern scored just one point, but added six assists.

After the cold shooting first half, Brown finished the game with 9 of 25 shooting from behind the three-point arc and 47 percent shooting from the field (25 of 53). Maine was held to just 36-percent shooting from the field (24 of 65).

Maine’s Junior Bernal led the Black Bears with 18 points, while Sean McNally registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Brown travels a couple of miles north for a Thanksgiving eve match-up against Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island, on Wednesday, November 25, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
