NHL Bruins Place Savard on Long Term IR
Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins have recalled forward Trent Whitfield on an emergency basis and placed forward Marc Savard on long term injured reserve (broken left foot). Whitfield will be available to play in tonight’s game between Boston and the Nashville Predators at 7 p.m. at the TD Garden. With the move, the P-Bruins have 21 players on their roster, including 11 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.
Whitfield, 32, ranks tied for third on the P-Bruins in scoring after recording three goals and five assists for eight points in the first six games of the AHL season, along with a plus-two rating. The 12th year pro and Providence captain was signed by Boston as a free agent on July 13, 2009. In his career, the center has appeared in 819 regular season games, including 177 NHL contests, totaling 549 points (223g, 326a). Whitfield has enjoyed NHL time with the Washington Capitals, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues over parts of seven seasons, registering 28 points (11g, 17a). In his postseason career, the native of Alamdea, Saskatoon, has suited up for 28 games, 14 at the NHL level, adding five goals and two assists. Whitfield was originally selected by the Bruins 100th overall in round four of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
Savard is expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury. He has led the Bruins in scoring in each of the last three seasons and currently paces the club in scoring this year with seven points (4g, 3a) in seven games. Last season, Savard appeared in all 82 regular season games and finished with 88 points (25g, 63a).
