UMASS-DARTMOUTH FOOTBALL FALLS TO ENDICOTT, 34-0



NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Endicott limited the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s football team to three yards rushing and 105 yards of net offense en route to a 34-0 victory in a New England Football Conference Boyd Division game at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.



The Gulls rolled up 339 yards in total offense and sacked UMass Dartmouth freshman quarterback Brendan McNeish (Springfield, MA /Bridgton Academy) eight times.



Endicott took the early lead, driving 62 yards in 10 plays on their first possession and scoring on a one-yard run by senior running back Tyler Felix (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS). Sophomore defensive back Luke Poirier (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield HS) blocked the extra point, and it was 6-0. Endicott drove 49 yards on their next possession, scoring on a 27-yard run by sophomore running back Mike Lane (Medfield, MA/Worcester Academy). Sophomore Carlos O’Donnell’s (Salem, MA/Pingree School) extra point made it 13-0 with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter.



Freshman wide receiver Joe Luiz (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) returned the ensuing kickoff to the Endicott 48-yard line. The Corsairs were held, but senior George Vasiliadis (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian HS) pinned the Gulls at their own eight-yard line with a 46 yard punt. EC got out of trouble with a 15-yard run by senior running back Colby Hawkins (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) and drove to the Corsair 42, but senior linebacker John Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) and freshman linebacker Jack Brown (Milton, MA/Milton HS) combined to stop Gull sophomore quarterback Phil Konopka (Shelton, CT/Shelton HS) on a fourth down sneak at the UMD 43 and the Corsairs took over.



After another exchange of punts, UMass Dartmouth drove deep into Endicott territory. McNeish hit Vasiliadis with an 11-yard pass to the EC 19. After a loss and a sack, McNeish hit Luiz for 15 yards to the Gull 15, but on fourth and six, freshman kicker Edgar Osols’ Summit, NJ/Summit HS) 32-yard field goal attempt missed.



An Endicott punt gave the Corsairs the ball at their 16, and they drove to their 48 before stalling on fourth and six. Junior defensive back Mike Dillon (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire HS) blocked Vasiliadis’ punt, and sophomore defensive back Bill Hickey (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) picked it up and raced 48 yards for a touchdown with 27 seconds left in the first half.



Endicott added a pair of touchdowns in the second half, driving 57 yards in eight plays to score on a 15-yard pass from Konopka to sophomore receiver Ryan Carino (Stratford, CT/St. Joseph HS) with 1:39 left in the third quarter, and driving 42 yards to score on Hawkins’ nine-yard run with 13:07 remaining.



“I thought we’d play a little better than we did,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. “After the first two series, our defense was able to settle in a bit. But we can’t win if we don’t score and we can’t keep people out of the end zone. Our offensive line has improved, but they have probably the best defensive player in the conference in (sophomore linebacker Kevin) Eagan. This was Brandon’s fourth start as a true freshman, and he’ll get better.”



Senior running back James Moore (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) led the Corsairs with 22 yards on the ground, while McNeish completed 14 of 24 passes for 102 yards, including 11 in a row in the first half. Senior wide receiver Marc Fiore (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) caught four passes for 43 yards. Hawkins and Lane each gained 84 yards on the ground for Endicott; Konopka completed 10 of 17 passes for 104 yards, three going to Carino for 70 yards. Defensively, Kelly had nine tackles and Brown eight for UMD, and each shared a tackle for lost yardage. For Endicott, junior defensive back P.J. Bay (Darien, CT/Darien HS) had nine tackles, while senior defensive lineman Jason Devonshuk (Oakland, NJ/Derby-CT HS) had seven tackles, including four for lost yardage and three and a half sacks.



Luiz returned five kickoffs for 127 yards for UMD. “Joe Luiz has done a great job,” said Robichaud. He’s a talented kid and he’s going to be a very, very good player for us.”



The Corsairs honored 11 graduations seniors prior to the game on Senior Day. “I felt badly for our seniors that we couldn’t go out on a better note for them on our home field,” said Robichaud. “We’ve got a dedicated group of seniors, and they come out and work hard every day.”



The Corsairs fell to 0-8 and 0-5 in the NEFC Boyd Division with the defeat, while the Gulls improved to 3-5 and 1-4 with the victory. UMD will conclude their season next Saturday at Curry, while Endicott will host MIT Saturday in their final game of the season.



“We’ve got one more chance to play a very good opponent,” said Robichaud. “We look at it as a challenge, and it will be fun for our team.”
