RIC STAR CARVALHO NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN SOCCER

Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College junior back Corey Carvalho (Dartmouth, MA) was named the 2009 Little East Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year and joined senior midfielder Ryan Kelley (Hope, RI) and sophomore forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) as First Team All-LEC selections.



Carvalho played in 19 games, starting 17 of them. He had one goal and one assist for three points. He recorded his first collegiate goal and set up another in RIC's, 4-2, win over Westfield State on Oct. 21. Carvalho, who was named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week once on the season, helped the Anchormen record four shutout victories this fall.



Kelley was named First Team All-LEC for the third consecutive season. He played in 18 games, starting all of them. Kelley had four goals, including one game-winner, and two assists for 10 points. He ranked fourth on the team in both goals and points. Kelley was named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week once on the season



Costa, along with Carvalho, earned his first selection to the league's All-Star squad. He played in 19 games, starting 12 of them. Costa had 15 goals, three of which were game-winners, and two assists for 32 points on the season. He was named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week once. Costa led RIC in goals and points.



Head Coach John Mello's team finished the 2009 season with a 9-8-2 overall record and a 5-2 (third place) finish in the Little East.
