Brown Soccer Earns At-Large Bid in NCAA Tournament

BROWN NEWS RELEASE

Providence, RI- The Brown men’s soccer team received an At-Large bid in the 2009 Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Monday evening.

The Bears will host Stony Brook (6-9-4) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Stevenson Field.

With a dominating 3-0 victory over Dartmouth College on Sunday afternoon, the Brown men’s soccer team claimed second place in Ivy League standings with 5-2-0 record and finished 10-2-5 overall.

This is the 24th appearance in the Big Dance, and its seventh trip in the last 10 years.

“It’s a great draw and I am really proud of the guys,” said Head Coach Mike Noonan. “It is a fantastic feeling to be back in the Tournament and I am happy that four teams from the Ivy League will be represented. It shows how strong the conference is.”

Brown’s last appearance was in 2007 when it finished its regular season 15-1-1 overall while it earned a perfect 7-0-0 record in league play to receive the Automatic Bid and a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament.

The squad matched up against Old Dominion, but lost 2-1 in double overtime. Four Ivy League teams were selected to compete in the Tournament.

Harvard receiving the automatic bid, as Brown, Dartmouth and Princeton will also be competing in the 48-team field.

Senior Midfielder Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA) is leading the Bears’ offense this season with 14 points on five goals and four assists, while sophomore forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) has scored four goals and six assists.

Rookie Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NJ) has been an outstanding force for Bruno this season, scoring five goals, all of which have been game-winners.

Junior goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) has been the glue of the defense with a 9-2-5 record in net. He has allowed just 13 goals in 16 games, and has picked up 45 saves on the year.
