Cranston West vs. Coventry

Bryan Monaghan

Here's an entire match from Thursday night's high school wrestling meet, where Cranston West's Katelyn Bouyssou, a sophomore, easily defeats her opponent from Coventry High School.

Bouyssou, 15, transferred from Scituate High School to Cranston West to be able to compete.

Cranston West won the meet, to move to 10 and 3 on the season.

Mike, I am the Cranston West coach and you fact are way off. Her clothes weighed 2.5 lbs. and she was only 1 lb. over with her clothes on. If you are going to make accusations you really should have the facts of the story. Both athletes were 105 which was a lb. under the 106 limit.

She is a beast... stop making excuses for the dude. Girls have less upper body strenght then guys and a 10 pound weight advantage is alot. I do Judo and its sorta like wrestlin and i fight guys 20 to 30 pounds bigger than me all the time.

Jason R. the pinning hold is a guillotine and is completely legal. I have been officiating HS wrestling for 25 years. The only stipulation is you cannot lock around the head of the opponent until near fall criteria is reached (which means scapulae and/or shoulders must be at a 45° angle or less and within 4 inches of the mat).

Mike S. the weight class is 103, they were allowed 3 lbs on Thursday (2 by rule book and one additional pound for consecutive days of wrestling). Therefore the weight required by weigh-in was 106 that night. She weighed 107 and had at least 2 lbs of clothes on as verified by the official there that evening.

She won with technique, not weight or brawn. Also the body composition of a boy and a girl of equal weight will always favor the boy who will have more muscle mass. The only thing I question is the pinning hold, a "guillotine" or aka "twister", which I thought was illegal for many years. She is an impressive technician.

You should check into the story of her weight and why she was allowed to wrestle while being 4 pounds over the limit. There is only a two pound allowance at this time. Because she was female, there was no one there to weigh her when she had to take clothes off to weigh again. Cranston West said her uniform and sneakers weighed four pounds. Without an unbiased female observer at any of her matches I wonder if she has been taking advantage of this all year. She is a very talented wrestler but should not have this kind of advantage over her opponents. In this instance her opponent was about 98 lbs and she was 107 lbs. That is a clear advantage. There should be no discussion on the opponents weight. The coach chose to have him wrestle with a weight disadvantage. The weight classes are there for a reason.
