Patriots defense lacks consistency despite record

AP

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots' young defense is hoping to play more consistently when it faces the New York Jets on Sunday.

Last Sunday night, the Patriots kept Peyton Manning and the
Indianapolis Colts under control for three quarters before the
quarterback led three touchdown drives in a 35-34 comeback victory.

Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees says his players played
well for a series against Indianapolis, then not as well on the
next series even though his play-calling was similar.

Pees says rookies can no longer be considered rookies after four
preseason games and nine regular-season games. Draft picks Pat
Chung, Darius Butler and Myron Pryor all have had considerable
playing time on defense.
