ABC6 News has learned that Providence School Board President Kathleen Crain, is stepping down from her position on the board.
Crain tells ABC6 that the mayor has effectively stripped the board of its power, and that lead to her decision.
ABC6 Reporter Shannon O'Brien has the story.
Mayor Angel Taveras' office released the following statement:
New legislation, which passed unanimously in the Senate, by a supermajority in the House, and was signed into law by the Governor, clearly defines the role of appointed school boards in negotiating labor contracts.
Only those elected by taxpayers should be responsible for signing union contracts. Ms. Crain apparently did not agree with this. I accept her resignation and thank her for her service to Providence and it's schoolchildren.
