All lanes of Route 95 Southbound were closed as a result of a 7 car accident, early Sunday morning.
According to the Rhode Island State Police, 3 separate accidents lead to the pileup. The first of the accidents took place when two cars collided in the high speed lane near Exit 26 on Route 95 Southbound in Pawtucket. A third car stopped to assist the two that had been in the accident, when it was hit by a 4th car.
A 5th car stopped to assist the previous 4 cars that had been involved in the two separate accidents, when that car was then hit by an alleged drunk driver. The alleged drunk driver then continued to hit 4 out of the 5 vehicles involved, and then crashed into a 7th car that was trying to avoid the accident.
A total of 10 people were involved in the 7 car accident, 6 of which were taken to area hospitals. 4 to Rhode Island Hospital, and 2 to Woman and Infants. All injuries were non-life threatening.
Rhode Island State Police arrested 25-year-old Derrick Azevedo of Pawtucket. Azevedo has been charged with driving under the influence. He has since been released from State Police custody, and is due in court on September 9th.
State Police continue to investigate the incident.
