50 kids spent their day off from school making improvements to the Gilbert Stuart Middle School in Providence. Among other things, they painted classrooms and murals in the cafeteria. It was all part of City Year Rhode Island's Day of Service event.
Every year, the organization chooses a school and dedicates the entire Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to fixing it up.
"I actually decided to come today because this is my last year here and I want to leave something behind to remember me by... This is my school, you know, so I want to make it better," said Carmelina Rosario, a volunteer with City Year Rhode Island.
The goal was to finish painting over a hundred classrooms and the cafeteria by the end of the day. City Year Rhode Island tells ABC6 they reached their goal by 3:00 P.M. Monday.
