ABC6 Exclusive: Cervelo reps inspect recalled bike from fatal accident

Posted: Updated:

Cervelo representatives flew in from Toronto Monday morning to try and find out if the bike their company made, and later recalled, is the reason why 58-year-old Gary Lanoue is no longer alive.

"It's very surreal," Susan Lanoue said. "I keep thinking he's going to come home."

For Susan Lanoue, it still has not really set in. Her husband Gary was riding his bike along Homestead Avenue in Rehoboth last week when the front wheel fell off and he crashed to his death.

"May 7th would have been our 35th wedding anniversary," Lanoue said while choking back tears.

For Susan, the grief is just beginning, and so is the investigation into what caused her husband to crash in the first place.

Police say the Cervelo bike Lanoue was riding had been recalled back in 2008 because the forks that hold the wheels in place tend to break off. Only ABC 6 News was there as Cervelo representatives showed up to inspect it. They told ABC 6 it was too early for them to comment.

Police say the representatives took photos and measurements to determine if the bike was altered and if their company is responsible.

"We're trying to come to some sort of conclusion to learn what caused the bike to breakdown or malfunction," Lt. James Trombetta said. "If it did indeed malfunction."

They are questions that Susan Lanoue wants answered too, but finding out will not bring her husband back to ride in the MS-150 for the 15th year, or see his three children and their grandchild. As of right now, a lawsuit is not the first thing on her mind.

"That's for later, when I can think," Lanoue said. "When I get my life back together."

Cervelo expects to have a report by the end of the week. The results will determine if the company is liable.
