Four foot caiman found in New Bedford apartment

Posted: Updated:

This nearly four foot reptile is what New Bedford animal control encountered when they were called to an abandoned apartment this morning.

This guy may look like an alligator but he is not.

He is a caiman, which is part of the crocodile family, more commonly found in Central and South America.

Officers have found abandoned reptiles before, but never one this big.

The aquarium that this was in was a pretty big tank. So the bigger the tank, the more room they have to grow and they usually try to grow to the size of the tank that they are living in.

A large pit bull was also found abandoned at the second floor apartment at 31 Ashley Street in New Bedford.

We went to the building to find out what was going on, but we were met with a torrent of abuse and profanity from neighbors who said we didn't belong there and that they knew nothing about the gator...

Which we've now determined was actually a caiman.
