SWAT take Newport man into custody after overnight standoff

Posted: Updated:

A Newport man is under evaluation after a standoff overnight in Newport. It happened after 11 last night, off of West Evans Street.

A 27-year-old man barricaded himself inside a house with his girlfriend's five children inside. This following a domestic disturbance early Friday morning, according to Lt. William Fitzgerald. He told officers he would shoot them and himself if they entered the house.

The standoff lasted a couple of hours. Eventually SWAT went inside the home and took him into custody, having to use a tazer on the man.

The five children were reunited with their mother. No one was hurt.
