Central Falls schools make turnaround

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - Central Falls High School is making a turnaround from one of its lowest points last year when teachers were removed in a mass firing.

The Providence Journal reports that discipline problems have fallen, student-run activities are doing well and school officials believe all are pulling in the same direction.

One exception is an 84.5 percent attendance rate this year, which is below Rhode Island's average of 92 percent.

Overall, teachers, union leaders, administrators and state officials agree that everyone is working together to improve the school.

The firings of the entire teaching staff put the school and the city into the national spotlight. Three months after the firings, a compromise was reached that saved all the teachers' jobs. That fall, the school embarked on a three-year transformation plan.
