Pawtucket cop takes the stand in Whiting trial

Posted: Updated:

It's not a sight you see often in a courtroom, a police officer testifying against a police chief.

But that's exactly what happened on Monday, in the trial of North Providence's suspended top cop, John Whiting.

Whiting is accused of stealing over 700-dollars from a stripper and then trying to cover it up.

Pawtucket police officer John Brown testified Monday that Chief Whiting, tried to give him the stolen money, and even told him to go spend it in Las Vegas.

Brown says that he couldn't believe what he was hearing, as Whiting asked him to break the law, and pocket the wad of cash.

Brown testified that he took the money from Whiting, but immediately gave it up to his bosses at the Pawtucket Police Department, knowing that nothing good, would come from Whiting's offer.

"I was sick and also frightened." said Officer Brown.

"My career was flashing before my eyes, he told me, 'Steal the money' and then he wanted me to take it. To be honest, I thought I was being set-up."

Whiting has pleaded not guilty to stealing the money.

He's also pleaded not guilty to two counts of criminal solicitation, for asking Officer Brown and Pawtucket's Police Chief Paul King, to cover up the alleged theft.
