State police investigate how confidential report of Caleb Chafee's party got out

Posted: Updated:

It's the second incident involving alcohol and Governor Chafee's son. Thursday morning Governor Chafee answered our questions about the incident, that sent a teenage girl to the hospital.

We have also found out today that state police have launched an internal investigation into the release of the confidential report on governor Chafee's son.

For this second time in two months Governor Chafee is having to answer questions about his 18 year old son Caleb and alcohol. The latest incident involves an underage drinking at the Chafee family compound in Exeter. A teenage girl who was drinking there and got sick was later taken to Kent Hospital after Caleb Chafee asked her and her friends to leave the party.

Governor Chafee said, "It's a private matter and Stephanie and I are handling it in a private way."

ABC 6 obtained a copy of the state police investigation; lots of names are blacked out because several juveniles were involved.

Mark Curtis asked Chafee: "Uou oversee the state police after all, are you comfortable or should someone else handle the investigation?"

Chafee responds, "Oh nothing is more important to me than upholding the high integrity of the Rhode Island State Police. We have a reputation across the country as the highest integrity and I'd never ever do anything to jeopardize that."

We also spoke with Rhode Island State Oolice Col. Steven O'Donnell, who said; "let the chips fall where they may" in terms of whether criminal charges could be filed against Governor Chafee's son, or anyone else at the party.
