PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The son of U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has been interviewed by police after attending a gathering that police say featured underage drinking and was hosted by Gov. Lincoln Chafee's 18-year-old son.

Whitehouse says Friday that his 19-year-old son Alexander "briefly" visited Caleb Chafee at the Chafee family property in Exeter early in the afternoon of May 28 and was home in Newport by 5 p.m. Whitehouse says his son did not consume alcohol at the gathering.

Police say an 18-year-old girl became ill that night and was treated at a hospital for alcohol poisoning. Authorities are deciding whether to bring criminal charges.

Whitehouse says his son didn't witness anyone becoming sick.

Whitehouse says his son is friends with Caleb Chafee and wanted to congratulate him for his high school graduation.
