PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Documents show that Rhode Island auditors tried unsuccessfully for days to see the financial records of former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's video gaming company as it neared collapse.

Emails obtained under a public records request show an attorney for the state Economic Development Corp. made several frustrated attempts in May to get auditors access to 38 Studios' books and records.

William Thomas, the company's former chief operating officer, says in the emails the firm didn't have anyone available to allow the auditors access.

Rhode Island officials lured 38 Studios from Massachusetts in 2010 with a $75 million loan guarantee. The company laid off its staff in May and filed for bankruptcy last month.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has accused the firm of stonewalling.

     Thomas declined to comment Thursday.
