North Kingstown's Christiana and Cassandra Layman have a passion for soccer and for helping others. They grew up the with game and Christiana plays the sport at Bay View Academy. Cassandra plays tennis at the school.
Three years ago, they watched with the rest of the world as Haiti was devastated by a powerful earthquake. The images moved them to do something for the children who were victims of the quake.
They went to their own closests to gather old soccer jerseys. They started a project called soccerRECYCLE, collecting gently used soccer clothing and equipment.
Recently, Ocean State Job Lot donated more than 3,000 pairs of soccer shoes. Paul Arpin Van Lines will transport the gear to the U.S. Soccer Foundation in North Carolina where it will be shipped to Haiti.
