WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Kent Hospital is seeking volunteers for its emergency department as the facility extends the hours of an initiative designed to more rapidly assess the needs of patients.

The Warwick hospital six months ago introduced a new "rapid assessment" model that officials say has dramatically reduced or even in some cases eliminated wait times for patients. It currently operates between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. but is being expanded in the coming months with the help of volunteers.

Two information sessions for potential volunteers are being held at the hospital next week.

Kent Hospital is Rhode Island's second largest hospital. Its emergency department sees about 60,000 patients each year.
