It looks like JetBlue is getting ready to put down stakes in Rhode Island. The EDC tweeted Friday the low cost airline is coming, and a few months ago the company's CEO tweeted the airline would be coming soon.
Governor Chafee is set to make a "special announcement" at TF Green, next week. He's not saying why, but there are several reports that JetBlue is the reason.
The ball is already rolling on an airport expansion at TF Green that'll allow large planes to fly in to the airport. That, paired with JetBlue coming means more direct flights and more people could head to TF Green for direct flights instead of going all the way to Boston's Logan Airport.
Baltimore, Martha's Vineyard, Newark, and Philadelphia are just some of the flights out of TF Green Friday. You notice they're all east coast cities.
"To add more flights or an airline that can carry us anywhere that would definitely be better,' said Newport resident Jenny Mitchell, "I see a lot more people coming because it's harder to get JetBlue."
Mitchell drives the three hours to get JetBlue out of Boston's Logan Airport, because the discount airline usually offers more direct flights. She's not the only one excited about reports JetBlue is coming.
"I think it would be hugely helpful to have more options up and down the east coast and out west," said Carol Matthews of Tiverton.
With more options at Rhode Island's airport, comes extra people traveling to the state to fly. That's good news for a lot of Post Road businesses that now get about 15-percent of their customers from airport traffic.
"There's going to be more people flying," said restaurant manager Kevin Silva, "They will be driving by and hopefully they'll be stopping in and grabbing some good food."
"I fly them sometimes when I go to California direct, so for them to be here instead of having people going to Boston, I believe it's going to increase business for everyone, including hotels," said restaurant owner Todd Rizzo.
JetBlue would neither confirm or deny that it is coming here to TF Green, Friday. Their big announcement is set for next Wednesday.
