Cranston police are investigating the death of a woman who was found inside a partially submerged car. Officers responded to the back service drive of the Wal-Mart store at 1776 Plainfield Pike, about 3 blocks east of Interstate 295, just after 2 p.m. Monday.
The car had driven right through a fence, and then plummeted into a storm water retention pond below, landing on its roof in the water.
There were no skid marks on the pavement, indicating the driver did not try to stop before hitting the fence. In addition, the driveway is a straight stretch of pavement, so hitting the fence would have required a sharp right or left turn.
Neighbors who live behind a stand if trees next to the retaining pond told ABC-6 they heard nothing suspicious overnight, or during the day. Employees of nearby stores also told us they didn't hear anything either.
Police are releasing very little information about they case. ABC-6 made numerous calls to the police chief and his top command staff, but our calls were not returned.
