BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured bone in his left hand and recalled both outfielder Ryan Kalish and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen from Triple-A Pawtucket.  Kalish and Mortensen will be active for tonight's game against the Tigers at Fenway Park.  Additionally, the club today activated right-handed pitcher Chris Carpenter from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Sweeney, 27, has hit .260 (53-for-204) with 19 doubles, two triples, 16 RBI, 22 runs and 12 walks in 63 games for the Red Sox this season, including a .277 clip (51-for-184) against right-handed pitching.  He has made 49 appearances in right field (35 starts) and 19 in center (15 starts).  Acquired by Boston from Oakland in December, Sweeney has compiled a .280 average (481-for-1,719) with 102 doubles, 12 triples, 14 home runs, 185 RBI, 224 runs and 151 walks over 535 career Major League games with the White Sox (2006-07), Athletics (2008-11) and Red Sox (2012).

Kalish returns for his second stint with the Red Sox this season.  The 24-year-old appeared in 18 games with the club from June 17-July 7, during which he hit .217 (13-for-60) with two doubles, five RBI, seven runs scored, two walks and a stolen base while making all 18 appearances in center field, including 15 starts.  A left-handed batter, he began the season on the 60-day disabled list recovering from left shoulder surgery and has hit .307 (23-for-75) with five doubles, four homers, 12 RBI, 16 runs and six stolen bases in 17 games with the PawSox this season, including three on rehab.  He also played three rehab games each for High-A Salem and Double-A Portland.  Selected by Boston in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, he has appeared in 71 Major League games in his career, all with the Red Sox in 2010 and 2012, over which he is 54-for-223 (.242) with 13 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 29 RBI, 33 runs, 14 walks and 11 stolen bases.

Mortensen, 27, has pitched in nine games with Boston this season, all in relief, over three previous stints with the club.  In those nine appearances the right-hander has a 1.33 ERA (3 ER/20.1 IP) with 16 strikeouts compared to four walks while holding opponents to a .174 clip (12-for-69).  He has also pitched for Pawtucket this season, going 5-3 with two saves, a 1.77 ERA (7 ER/35.2 IP) and 35 strikeouts in 22 Triple-A relief outings.  Acquired by Boston from Colorado in January, Mortensen has appeared in 33 Major League games (13 starts) with the Cardinals (2009), Athletics (2009-10), Rockies (2011) and Red Sox (2012), going 4-8 with a 4.45 ERA (57 ER/115.1 IP) and 66 strikeouts, including a 2.68 ERA (14 ER/47.0 IP) in 20 Big League relief appearances.

The 26-year-old Carpenter began the season on the 60-day disabled list recovering from right elbow surgery.  He combined for a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP) with one save, 16 strikeouts and just seven hits allowed over 12 rehab outings (4 starts) between Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, Single-A Greenville, Double-A Portland and Pawtucket, including a 1.29 ERA (1 ER/7.0 IP) in seven appearances for the PawSox.  He made his Major League debut with Chicago in 2011 and posted a 2.79 ERA (3 ER/9.2 IP) over his 10 games with the Cubs, all out of the bullpen.  Selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, Carpenter owns a 21-19 record, three saves, a 3.58 ERA (141 ER/354.0 IP) and 305 strikeouts in 108 career minor league games (64 starts) in the Cubs (2008-11) and Red Sox (2012) systems.

With today's moves, Boston's 40-man roster now stands at 39.
