PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - While jobs and Rhode Island's battered economy continue to dominate this year's legislative races, a quiet battle over gay marriage could determine whether Rhode Island joins six other states in recognizing same-sex marriages.

The group "Fight Back Rhode Island" is supporting several candidates who support extending marriage rights to same-sex couples. The group is hoping that if enough supporters of its cause are elected, legislation to recognize gay marriage could pass next year.

Lawmakers last year approved civil unions after gay marriage legislation failed because of opposition in the Senate.

House Speaker Gordon Fox says he'd like lawmakers to pass gay marriage next year. Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, a gay marriage opponent, isn't saying whether this year's election could prompt her to allow a vote on the contentious issue.
