PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A fourth sample in Rhode Island has tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness known as Eastern equine encephalitis.
The Department of Environmental Management said Thursday that a mosquito sample trapped in Barrington on Sept. 5 has been confirmed positive for EEE. The infected mosquitoes are a type that feeds almost exclusively on birds.
The state Department of Health laboratory tested the sample.
Three mosquito pools have also tested positive in Rhode Island this year for West Nile virus. State officials this week announced the state's first human case of West Nile fever in a Newport County man in his 50s. He has recovered.
