RIDOT says the second span of the Pawtucket River bridge will open on Saturday, September 15 as workers continue their construction of a new bridge that can handle the traffic that travels through every day.
Once workers shift the driving lanes of the old bridge to the new one, the 18-ton weight limit will be removed, allowing trucks to use it, instead of taking a detour.
Lane closures are expected this evening starting at 8 P.M. on I-95 Southbound as workers shift complete the task.
Once the lane shift is complete, motorists will no longer have access to Exit 27, downtown Pawtucket.
Drivers will have to take a detour to get to downtown through either Exit 25 or Exit 30 until workers finish the rest of the bridge, which is expected to be completed in 2013.
