WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) - The University of Rhode Island is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its W. Alton Jones campus in West Greenwich.
The 2,309-acre property was donated in 1962 by Nettie Marie Jones, the wife of oil executive W. Alton Jones, who died in a plane crash.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee says the state continue to benefit from the gift.
URI President David Dooley says the forested campus is an invaluable resource to the university's research scientists.
It is also used for camps, weddings and conferences.
The school is holding a rededication event on Sunday at the campus.
