PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A group of Providence neighborhoods has won a citywide contest to improve recycling rates and will get a free neighborhood barbecue as a reward.
The Mayor's Neighborhood Recycling Challenge lasted six weeks and awarded a barbecue and two trees to the area that increased its recycling rate the most.
The office of Mayor Angel Taveras says the area that includes Elmhurst, Wanskuck, and parts of Charles, Mount Pleasant and Smith Hill increased its recycling rate by 12.5 percent.
Citywide, recycling rates increased just .5 percent during the same period.
The winning area will have a free barbecue on Saturday afternoon at Fargnoli Park.
