The family of a Woonsocket mother, brutally murdered five years ago, watched as her killer finally admitted to the crime Tuesday.
Michael Ducharme, 45, apologized to the family of Vicki Connolly after changing his plea to guilty in court. He admitted to beating her, stabbing her and leaving her with a synthetic cord wrapped around her neck in the woods in Burrillville.
The emotion was hard to contain for a family that waited 5 long years for this, but then came something they did not expect.
"I'd like to say sorry to the family," Ducharme said. "And I hope you find closure in this. I'm sorry for what happened."
Connolly's friends and family say it is an apology they are not ready to accept.
"He's only sorry he got caught," Lucy Blais said. "He has no remorse. He's an animal."
Ducharme was sentenced to 60 years in prison with 40 to serve.
