The ING New York City Marathon has been canceled.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the decision late Friday, giving in to public pressure.
Bloomberg came under fire for originally saying the marathon would go on, despite the fact that thousands of New Yorkers are still without power or homeless due to Hurricane Sandy.
Some New Yorkers argued holding the race would have been insensitive and divert police and other important resources while so many people are still suffering.
The race has never been canceled since it was started in 1970.
