Rhode Islanders who receive food stamps are getting $535,796 to replace items lost from Superstorm Sandy.
The federal government will replace 25% of benefits from October in communities where 50% or more residents lost power
Those communities include: Charlestown, Exeter, Foster, Glocester, Hopkinton, Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Narragansett, Newport, Richmond, Scituate, South Kingstown, Tiverton and Westerly.
Residents on the program, who lost frozen or perishable foods, do need to apply for reimbursements from the Rhode Island Department of Human Services for replacement benefits.
Those benefits will then be automatically added to recipients' benefits.
