No. 11 Brown Soccer Earns At-Large Bid in NCAA Tournament

 Brown University Release

Providence, R.I. - The No. 11 Brown University men's soccer team received an At-Large bid in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Monday evening.  The Bears will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Drexel  Dragons at Vidas Field on Thursday, Nov. 15.  Brown is making its 27th appearance in the Big Dance, and its seventh trip in the last eight years.

"We're excited to once again be in the NCAA Tournament," said Head Coach Patrick Laughlin.  "I feel that our body of work over the course of the season has given us a chance to get the at-large bid, and to see our name come up as an at-large was a great feeling.  We've been able to defeat four different teams from four different conferences that have been selected for the tournament, so we are excited about the possibility of playing another school from another conference and heading to Philadelphia to play Drexel. They have an outstanding program."

The Bears ended the regular season with a 12-2-3 record and finished 4-1-2 in the Ivy League to place third in the standings.  Brown was riding a 12-game unbeaten streak into their final game of the season at Dartmouth last Saturday night.  After a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation, Dartmouth scored the ‘buzzer beating' goal just as time ran off the clock to earn a 2-1 win.

"For the senior class ,who have played in eight tournament games in their career, it's a great opportunity for them to continue being collegiate soccer players, and we look forward to playing on Thursday."

Sophomore forward Ben Maurey (Downingtown, PA) came on strong at the end of the season, scoring four goals in the Bears' last five games to become the leading scorer with 12 points (5 g, 2 a).   Senior midfielder Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NY) is close behind in second with 10 points on three goals and four assists, followed by senior Bobby Belair (Myrtle Beach, SC) with nine points (3 g, 3 a).

Brown's stingy defense has shut down 10 opponents and has allowed just 10 goals on the year.  Senior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) ranks first in the Ivy League and third in the country in goals against average (0.478), as well as first in the league and seventh in the country in save percentage (0.855).

Helping the defense have been senior co-captains Ryan McDuff (Plano, TX) and Eric Robertson (San Antonio, TX), as well as senior Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL) and sophomore Alex Markes (Valencia, CA).

Last season, the Bears made their second straight run to the NCAA's Sweet 16, defeating both Fairfield and St. John's before falling to St. Mary's (Calif.).
