A 41–year–old New Bedford youth hockey coach is in jail, accused of trying to have sex with two teen he met online. Anthony DeSilva thought the two teens, who are from Florida were coming to Massachusetts this week to meet him, but he got quite a surprise when two detectives showed up instead at his home in Achushnet.
DeSilva has been teaching kids the basics of hockey for more than 15 years. He's led the Massachusetts Maple Leafs as head coach, a junior hockey league made up of players 16 to 20 years old. Police down in Florida say he used that passion for sports to try and have sex with two 16–year–old boys he met online.
The facebook relationships started earlier this year, but DeSilva had no clue one of their mothers intervened and contacted police. The coach continued texting and facebooking with who he thought were the teen boys, but he was actually sending nude pictures to undercover detectives. "He also encouraged the kids to send nude pictures of themselves. And he told them in explicit graphic details what he wanted to do with him and what he wanted to do to them, " says Sheriff Grady Judd.
Back in Massachusetts, word of the coach's arrest spread quickly through out New Bedford and Rayhnam where his team practices. "It could be anyone if it's a coach it's sad, he's responsible for protecting your children and teaching them and getting them to grow, " says Stephen Helme.
His arrest is also hitting his hometown of Achushnet hard. Neighbors say he lived with his parents on Fairfield Street and had his team at the home regularly. "Anyone with a son under his coaching is going to question that, " says Yvette Costa.
DeSilva will be in court in New Bedford Friday morning. He'll then be sent to Florida where police say he could face even more charges.
