Swansea police investigating homicide

SWANSEA, Mass. - State and local police are investigating an apparent homicide, which they say happened early Saturday morning.

Police say they received a phone call shortly after 5:30 a.m. Saturday. The caller told police that a woman had died in her home at 500 Ocean Grove Avenue.

Once police arrived, they quickly determined that Lisa Mello, 51, had likely been murdered. Swansea police called in Massachusetts State police Detectives and Homicide unit to investigate Mello's death.

Police had no word on if there are any suspect, and have not yet made any arrests.

Officials are working to determine Mello's cause of death.

Swansea Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to this office and Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating an apparent homicide, which occurred in Swansea early this morning.

Swansea Police received a 911 call around 5:35 a.m. regarding a deceased woman inside her home at 500 Ocean Grove Avenue.  Once on scene, Swansea Police determined the woman---identified as Lisa Mello, 51, of 500 Ocean Grove Avenue---was likely the victim of a homicide. Massachusetts State Police Detectives and Homicide Unit prosecutors were immediately notified and an investigation into the death began. Crime Scene Services are currently processing the scene and the State Medical Examiner's Office will be taking custody of the deceased to determine the cause and manner of her death during an autopsy.

Assistant District Attorney Stephen Butts is coordinating the investigation.

As the investigation is in its early stages, no further details about the case can be released at this time. If and when more details can be released or an arrest is made, this office will send out a follow up press release.
