NEWPORT, R.I. - A man is in police custody after turning himself in for a stabbing that sent a 41-year-old man to Newport Hospital with serious injuries.
Police say they have arrested Jamere Wilkins, 36, after he turned himself into police without incident.
Newport police say they were called to the Newport Hospital around 1 a.m. Saturday morning after hospital staff alerted them to a stabbing victim being treated for multiple lacerations in the hospital's emergency room.
According to police, the stabbing happened at the Rolling Green Apartments off of Admiral Kaldfus Road. About six hours later, police had enough information to issue a warrant for Wilkins' arrest.
Police say Wilkins now faces a charge of felony assault. Police have not yet released the name of the victim, and have not yet determined what led to the stabbing.
