WEST GREENWICH, R.I. - One person is dead and four other people are recovering at Rhode Island Hospital after a two-car crash on Route 3 in West Greenwich.
Police say around 11 a.m. Saturday, a Nissan Murano was traveling northbound on I-95 and turned off onto Exit 6/Route 3. The Murano went to turn and drove across the four-lane highway, but an oncoming GMC sport utility vehicle somehow collided with the Murano.
The driver and one passenger inside the Murano were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries. Three people were inside the GMC, two of which were taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. The GMC caught fire during the accident, but the fire was quickly brought under control by the fire department.
The rear passenger of the GMC was pronounced dead at the scene.
Route 3 was closed down in both directions shortly after 11 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and is back open to traffic.
Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased victim.
